Povidone Iodine
1-ethenylpyrrolidin-2-one; molecular iodine.

An iodinated polyvinyl polymer used as topical antiseptic in surgery and for skin and mucous membrane infections.

Mechanism of Action
It is a soluble complex of iodine with large molecular organic compound that serve as carrier-release free iodine slowly. It has a broad anti-microbial coverage and is a potent aerobicidal. It has anti-fungal, anti-protozoal and anti-viral actions. It is non-irritating, non-toxic, non-staining and gives prolonged anti-microbial action. It is a bactericidal drug effective against Streptococcus mitis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Proteus, Mycobacterium cheloni, E.coli, Pseudomonas cepasia, Klebsiella, Many Viral Species, Protozoa, Yeast.

Onset Of Action: Within minutes

Duration Of Action: > 6 hrs

Adverse Effects: Sensitivity of skin.

Contraindications:Hypersensitivity to iodine, Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or those receiving lithium therapy.

Special Precautions
To avoid contact with eyes, stop treatment if redness, irritation or swelling develops. Renal impairment. Broken skin : Application to large wounds or severe burns may produce systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia and impairment of renal function.

Breast Feeding: Use with caution

Old Age:May be used.

Interactions: Lab tests: May interfere with thyroid function tests.

Ointment:Boils.Furnuculosis.Impetigo.Sycosis,barbae.Otitis externa.Paronychia.Burns.Ulcers.Tinea infections.Cutaneous candidiasis. Solution: Herpes. Topical treatment of moniliasis.Trichomoniasis.Powder : Exudative wounds, post-surgical dressing, episiotomy. Pre-operative preparation of the skin and mucous membranes of mouth and vagina, Pre-operative and post-operative scrubbing and washing of hands & disinfection of operative site.

Ointment: Apply once daily or as required & cover the wound. Apply 8 hourly for burns. Powder: Sprinkle as required. Solution: Apply once daily or as required. Continue for at least 14 days regardless of intervening menstruation.
